The Envy Corps @ The Waiting Room: 3.25.11

I’ve seen The Envy Corps once before. It was last fall at the 12th Street Pub in Lincoln and during the Lincoln Calling Festival. Their mighty sound was too much for that tiny room and I left with a more-or-less sense of indifference to the Ames, Iowa-based group.

Come last Friday at the Waiting Room my indifference turned to awe. They are an incredibly tight and intense band that, unbeknownst to me, already has a good following here in Omaha. They take cues from rock heroes of the 2000s like Modest Mouse and Interpol. There are even hints of Radiohead buried in all that atmospheric pedal stomping. And apparently their lead man Luke Pettipoole now lives in Omaha. Does that make them an Omaha band? If so, they are among the best in the city, no doubt. If they play their cards right (and they seem like the type of band that can play a hand of cards), we could see them flirting with mainstream US success. Seriously. They’re good and play the type of music people want to hear.

Also on the bill: Omaha bands Lonely Estates and Thunder Power. (DISCLAIMER: I’m in Thunder Power. And since this post is not about Thunder Power, there’re no shifty hidden agendas here.) Bloomington, Indiana-based songwriter My Pal Dragon opened. And for the record, My Pal Dragon’s Matt Hutton used to be in Thunder Power as well. He even set this show up with Thunder Power. So I guess he’s the reason I was even at the show in the first place, hence being so pleasantly surprised by The Envy Corps.

One more note: the show featured the debut performance of M.P.C., a hip-hop crew with members from Omaha and Minneapolis.

After leaving his post as managing editor at an Omaha alt-weekly in 2010, Will decided that everything he does career-wise from now on must involve music or writing and hopefully both. He's currently the editor at Omahype, an amateur cartoonist and also plays in rock 'n' roll bands.

I think Thunder Power could have gone toe to toe as the best band of the evening; if not first, then a close second.
