España was the usual hopping spot last Thursday as it was once again overtaken by  loom — one of the most popular monthly dance parties in the area. For April, loom-creator and local music figurehead Brent Crampton celebrated his birthday by bringing in one of his favorite DJs, NYC’s own Master Kev. Needless to say Kev had a good time helping weave the social fabric of Nebraska’s largest city through dance.

Since we couldn’t make it, Omahype caught up with Brent post-loom to see how the night turned out.

OMAHYPE: How do you know Master Kev and was it easy to get him to come out to Omaha?

Brent: I’ve spent some time with Master Kev in Miami & Mexico. I was at the Mi Casa Holiday in Playa del Carmen last year with dozens of DJs. Of all of us that played, he absolutely stole the whole damn cake. From the moment he got on until the sunrise, the whole room was going mad. So I figured my birthday at loom would be a fantastic excuse to have him up. The thing with Omaha is … the knowledge base of who’s behind the music we play at loom minimally exists in Omaha. So getting people to pay more than $5 for some DJ from some other city can be a challenge. Meaning, when DJs come through, they do so out of the love and not the pocket but because luckily loom’s developed a national reputation for having an amazing party. So while the economy to support these guys may not be here, the hunger in Omaha is at least at the same level and sometimes higher than parties these DJs play in larger cities. Crazy, huh?

OMAHYPE: No doubt! Did Kev have a good time?

Brent: Definitely: He wrote, “the energy was high in that room! thanks for all the love, look forward to the next time.”

OMAHYPE: What was the overall vibe of night?

Brent: We had a few challenges to overcome between the downpour of rain all day and the 1,700-person sold out Bassnectar concert. But a decent enough crowd pulled through to really reciprocate energy in the room.

Will Silvey Simons Writer/Editor/Musician

After leaving his post as managing editor at an Omaha alt-weekly in 2010, Will decided that everything he does career-wise from now on must involve music or writing and hopefully both. He's currently the editor at Omahype, an amateur cartoonist and also plays in rock 'n' roll bands.
