Doing Good: Local Group Turning Strip Club Into Community Center
In a press release sent out this morning, inCOMMON Community Development announced it will turn the recently-closed and longly-seedy strip club known as Sheri’s Show Club on Leavenworth Street and Park Avenue into a community center for the surrounding historic and blighted downtown neighborhood. Apparently the building was purchased by the adjacent Kohll’s Pharmacy & Homecare in late 2010 for future expansion, but instead of letting the building sit empty, Kohll’s has agreed to let inCOMMON use the space to benefit the local community.
“The center is is designed to provide a range of support and services for low-income and other at-risk residents in the area,” it says in the press release.
Christian Gray, executive director of inCOMMON, is quoated in the release as saying: “The transformation from a strip-club to a community center is a powerful symbol of the health, vibrancy, and hope we envision for all neighborhoods.”
No official opening date for the new community center was announced. Those interested in helping or who want additional information are encouraged to contact inCOMMON.
