The Show Is The Rainbow @ Bourbon Theatre: 5.20.11

WORDS/PHOTOS: Shannon Claire

Last Friday, May 20th, one-man-party band The Show Is The Rainbow (Darren Keen) kicked off his 10 month Honeymoon Tour at the Bourbon Theatre in Lincoln. The night also saw the the soft release of the latest TSITR LP, Tickled Pink, available now on Keen’s It Are Good Records. Also on the bill: Piss Poor, Powerful Science, Grabass, and Bentone. [-ed.]

A FIRST HAND ACCOUNT OF THE SHOW (AND AFTER PARTY):

The Show Is The Rainbow was off the hook, of course, with two screens set up for his set featuring projections from awesome video artist Bryan Klopping, along with Darren’s reputable table top screaming and crowd surfing. The crowd was full of friends new and old amongst some die hard TSITR followers. The Bourbon was alive for sure that night. However, the party jumped to a whole other level after the show…

The after party at newlyweds Darren and Lacey’s house made for quite possibly the best going away party they could’ve hoped for. The house was all packed up, as they were leaving the next day for TSITR’s gig in Ames, Iowa.

At about 3 a.m., epic sounds from Fumanusha (sp?), a progressive rock band with raw vocals — killer bass and mind-blowing drums — awed the gatherers in the basement. DJ Spencelove, along with a few other friends, mixed up some sweetness until the sun rose; literally birds were chirping and the sun was out as 50-plus started spilling out of the house to let Darren and Lacey take a cat nap before finishing their move. -Shannon Claire
