Pennyhawk @ Clawfoot House: 7.21.11
Pennyhawk, (Ames, Iowa), as they say are “Doing the Damn Thing,” and I couldn’t agree more. After their send off show at Space in Ames, Iowa, they are embarking on a mini summer Midwest tour to debut their four song EP “Another Layer.” The Clawfoot House of course opened their doors with eager arms to embrace the gypsy folk honky tonk artists to fill their house with a waltzy vaudeville sound. Barefoot and in the sweetest blue dresses, three of the five band members, Kate Kennedy, Holly Figureroa, and Leslie Hall gave the house a craving for more within the first five minutes.
Pennyhawk, spearheaded by Kate Kennedy, isn’t exactly what one would picture considering Kate has been involved with groups like Leslie and the Ly’s, Mumford’s, and Christopher Conquered. If you’re familiar with even one of those groups, you would get what I’m saying.
The ladies played musical chairs to every song, from Kennedy manhandling a sultery clarinet to toe tappin guitar, Figueroa harmonizing and seducing the keys, to an impressive trumpet solo by Hall all the while keeping those drums on a pure heartbeat. I look forward to the whole band touring in the future if only three of the members were able to provide such a stellar show. Hope we don’t have to wait too long.
You can get their “Another Layer” EP here for just $4! Skip your frappaccino and support the awesomeness of Pennyhawk. You won’t be disappointed, as a matter of fact you’ll swoon. And as a bonus you also saved yourself 900 calories!
