Perceptions from Nowhere launch party @ The Bourbon Theatre: 8.3.11

WORDS/PHOTOS: Shannon Claire

Perceptions from Nowhere (PFN), in collaboration with Poet Show It, had its launch party last Wednesday at the Bourbon Theatre in Lincoln. The event consisted of an open mic hour followed by a handful of local Nebraska poets, writers and musicians reading their writings, among them Darren Keen (The Show is the Rainbow), Tim Scahill (Irkutsk), Eric Harris (Birds), and special guests Benjamin Clark (former Lincolnite) and Colin Winnette (Chicago, IL).  Musical acts Scammers (Kansas City, MO) and local Lincoln band Birds also performed.

Ben Clark is currently touring with his new book Reasons to Leave the Slaughter (released by Write Bloody Publishing), and was joined by writer Colin Winnette. Between Winnette’s tarantula tales and Clark’s impressive storytelling, it was pretty clear that Lincoln, and I’m hoping the rest of Nebraska, eagerly embraces the movement of spoken word in all shapes and forms. The full house was able to show support not only in attentive silence as the poets read aloud, they were also able to purchase audio books and friendly felt beards that Clark inspired.

Scammers riled up the audience afterwards with a mind blowing performance. Sarabeth Dunton twisted theatrics and beat banging moves, all against a shaky melodic voice and internally-felt electric pop beats of Phil Diamond.

PFN Ideas is open for submissions to the Poet Show It Anthology, a collection of writers and artists who live in or have lived in Lincoln. This will be the second anthology PFN has produced. Writers can submit text or word documents to pfnideas@gmail.com.

Poet Show It meets every other Wednesday at 11th and D streets in Lincoln. Writers, photographers, and artists of all kinds are welcome.
