Backline Improv
You can catch Backline Improv doing their thing at Studio Gallery every Friday evening.
To get a better idea of what Backline Improv is exactly, check out this feature we did on their one-year anniversary in March. Here’s an excerpt:
A typical evening at Backline Improv Theater is divided into three shows at 8:30, 9:30 and 11 p.m. with 15 minute gaps in between. This is designed to allow people to come and go, Rohde said.
Backline practices long-form improv, where entire shows are built off of a few suggestions. So at the beginning of a section they’ll ask for a one-word suggestion from the audience. Depending on the form of improv they are doing, they may share a couple of personal thoughts or memories they associate with that suggestion. Then they’ll progress into improvised scenes based on all that information. It could be a series of short scenes, they could interconnect, or it could be a long, uninterrupted scene. You never know. That’s the joy of improv.
Studio Gallery is at 4965 Dodge, right across the street from the Old Dundee Bar & Grill. A $5 donation is appreciated, but the place is BYOB so you can check out an Omahype Cheap-Ass Beer Review and it’ll end up being a pretty cheap night.
